Ferguson...

White cop shoots an unarmed black kid six times, killing him. Local black folks protest angrily and as civilly as possible with total justification. Cops respond by breaking out the heavy artillery, complete with mine-resistant vehicles, because they can. Every right-wing punditoid asshole in this country committed to keeping their dead-end constituents gorged with whatever red meat happens to be handy sides with the white cop because But, But... Thug -- and, more or less, they get away with it, because let's face it, they always get away with this shit. One way or another.

I think there are multiple reasons why Fergusons keep happening in this supposedly enlightened day and age, but if I had to pick one over all, I'd pick the combating monsters one. There may be a time when becoming a monster is the best bet in overcoming one, but deep down, if you have any conscience worth speaking of, you're still gonna have doubts about going down that road.

Unlike the right-wing assholes arrayed against you.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Same as it ever was...

  1. Just for fun, just to see if it's feasible at all, lets say that Michael Brown really did attack the cop in his vehicle, break his orbital socket, and attempt to take his weapon. Suppose during the struggle, the gun discharged. Brown and his buddy might think the cop has been shot, and high-tail it out of there. But the cop follows protocol and pursues, ordering them to stop. Keep in mind, Wilson has already been assaulted, and an attempt made to take his weapon. Now he is in pain and probably seeing through only one eye, since the other eye socket has been smashed. Brown realized the cop is not hit, turns and taunts him, hands up. The cop fires non-fatal shots, to stop Brown. They did not. He continued coming. IF it happened this way, Wilson had every reason to defend himself from someone trying to kill him.

Is it really that impossible to imagine a scenario in which the cop was justified? Maybe this is not a case of injustice, but of justifiable self defense.

  2. If what you're supposing is true, then this should be an open-and-shut case. Clearly it isn't. I don't love the police, but I don't love talking smack about them either -- there are good ccops and bad cops, and this looks to me like a case where the bad ones are fucking it up for the good ones and poisoning the well of public opinion in the process. Shooting an unarmed person once in self-defense in certain situations, I can see. But six times? I don't know what to call that, but I'm positive it ain't self-defense. Something else is going on here...

  3. Oh, and that "Just for fun" intro of yours? We're talking about a kid who was shot dead here, okay? There ain't a damn thing about this that even begins to qualify as "fun." My two cents...

This is a First Amendment zone, but I do use word verification now. If you don't like that, well, this is also a Fifth Amendment zone. Take your pick...
